Atmospheric Physics
The purpose of this course is to understand the physical properties of the Earth's atmosphere composed of molecules, clouds, aerosols, etc., and their relation to weather and climate systems, especially from the viewpoint of thermodynamics and atmospheric radiation. It is required to understand the composition and temperature of the atmosphere, the energy balance of the air surface system, the processes of evaporation, cloud formation, and precipitation, and the actual conditions and factors of their spatiotemporal variations, based on specific observation examples.
Students will be able to understand the energy balance of the atmosphere and the phase change of water as an application of statistical mechanics such as the first and second laws of thermodynamics studied in physics and gas molecule kinetics, and also as an application of early quantum theory. In addition, students will be able to understand the relationship between climate change and clouds, water vapor, and aerosols.
