Academic Writing

授業の目的と概要/Object and Summary of Class

This intensive course will cover the essentials of academic writing at the graduate studies level. It will help partcipants acquire important writing and organizational skills such as understanding different types of academic studies and how to structure them, forming research objectives and questions, designing research tools such as interview templates and surveys, managing secondary sources to avoid unintentional plagiarism, writing abstracts, organizing academic articles, and writing a critical literature review.

学習の到達目標/Goal of study

At the end of the course the participants will have a thorough understanding of the essential elements of academic writing and how to organize their research and present it in multiple academic forums and forms.

授業内容・方法と進度予定/Contents and progress schedule of the class

DAY 1 Session one: Formulating your study (mission statement) Session two: Choosing a research design Session three: Reading literature critically (literature review) and identifying the research gap Session four: Formulating research objectives and research questions DAY 2: Session five: Designing your research tools Session six: Writing abstracts and academic articles Session seven: managing secondary sources and writing skills to avoid unintentional plagiarism Session eight: Wrap-up and review of course, Q and A

成績評価方法/Evaluation method

Participants will be evaluated on short in-class assignments and a longer homework assignment to compose a short critical literature review that will be submitted after the intensive course.
