Course Title (授業題目)

Sociology of Risk and Uncertainty

授業の目的と概要

不確実性やリスクは、災害・環境・健康・科学技術・犯罪等といった多様な問題領域と関わり合いながら、昨今の社会学でも重要な概念の一つとなっている。この授業ではリスクや不確実性に関する社会学の定評あるテキストを取り上げ、多様なテーマをリスク概念と関連づけながら議論していくことで、受講生とともに、「リスク社会化」する社会を、社会学的にいかに論じうるかを探ってみたい。とくに、いわゆる「リスク社会」論では相対的に見過ごされてきたジェンダーとリスクとの関連について、考察する。

Course Objectives and Course Synopsis(授業の目的と概要)

"Risk" and "uncertainty" are treated as the basic concepts of sociology today. Those are related to the various subjects such as disater, environmental problem,crime,and technological crisis. In this course, we will discuss the way to discribe the modern society which has become a "risk society" through doing a close and careful examination of the text. Particularly, we will discuss the relationship between gender and risks, which has been somewhat overlooked in so-called "risk society" theory.

Learning Goals(学習の到達目標)

The main goals of the course are:
(1)Students will develop the reading skills to understand the sociological English texts
(2)Student will find a clue for addressing the problem of risk and uncertainty sociologically.
(3)Students will be able to develop a perspective to capture the relationship between gender and risks.
