Course Title (授業題目)

Mādhyamika in India on Emptiness, Compassion, and the Practice

授業の目的と概要

インド中観派の思想と実践を理解するために、関連するインド仏教文献の和訳を資料として利用しながら、空とは何かを多角的に解説する。空性そのものだけはなく、慈悲との関係やインド後期中観派の実践も取り上げることで、インド大乗仏教の展開のひとつに触れることにもなる。

Course Objectives and Course Synopsis(授業の目的と概要)

This course offers a general introduction to the thought and practice presented by Mādhyamika in India. We will read a Japanese translation of related Indian Buddhist materials and investigate what is meant by emptiness from different perspectives. It may also provide a survey of an aspect of development of Mahayana Buddhism by focussing not only on emptiness itself but also its relationship to compassion, the practice of late Mādhyamika in India, and so on.

The aim of this course is a better understanding of the thought and practice presented by a school of Mahayana Buddhism in India, Mādhyamika.
