Japan’s heritage of thought: Reading the Housewife Controversy
本授業では、フェミニズムの歴史を学ぶとともに、日本の思想遺産である主婦論争を解読することを目的としている。さらに、男性や社会にもかかわる論点がなぜ女性の論点として論じられてきたのか、なぜ女性のライスコース選択をめぐる論争が時代や論点の変容を経ても繰り返されるのかなど、社会のメカニズムについても考察する。さらに、東大祝辞（2019年）を読み解くことを通して、日本におけるジェンダー問題を把握し、一人一人が生きやすい社会になるためにはどのようにしていきたいかを主体的に考える。
The purpose of this course is to give an overview of the history of feminism and interpret the Housewife Controversy, part of Japan’s heritage of thought. It also aims to analyze social mechanisms such as why the controversy revolved around women despite also concerning men and wider society, and why controversy regarding women’s choice of life course continues even as the era and talking points change. Furthermore, through a reading of Chizuko Ueno’s 2019 Matriculation Ceremony Congratulatory Address at the University of Tokyo, this course will help students grasp social problems in Japan from the perspective of gender, and explore how we can take independent action to change society.

This course is designed to help students understand the history of feminism.
It also aims to consider social problems from the perspective of gender.
Furthermore, it is intended to help students think about issues of concern to them, to pose their own questions about those issues, and to solve them.

教科書は使用しない。レジュメを配布する。参考文献は適宜紹介する。
No textbook will be used. Handouts will be provided at every class. Reference materials will be introduced as necessary.
授業の予習と復習、宿題、発表準備、レポート執筆。
Students are required to prepare and review for each class. Assignments may be given, and preparation for a presentation and an essay will also be required.
毎回授業の最後にレスポンス・カードを提出する。
Students will be requested to complete a response card at the end of each class.
