Course Title (授業題目)

Introduction to English Syntax I

授業の目的と概要

英語の音声と文法に関する基本的現象が現代言語学の観点からどのように分析されるのを解説し、英語学における基本概念や論証の仕方を理解してもらう。また、英語の歴史的変遷や他の言語との違いを解説することにより、英語という言語の普遍性と特殊性を理解してもらう。

Course Objectives and Course Synopsis(授業の目的と概要)

This course is an introduction to the formal analysis of syntactic structures of English within a framework of Generative Grammar. We will also see the sound system and historical change of English.

１）英語の音声の基本的特徴を理解する。
２）英語の文法の基本的特徴を理解する。
３）英語の歴史的変遷と他の言語との共通点・相違点を理解する。

Students will understand three aspects of English: basic concepts of syntax, the sound system and the history and development.

講義内容の十分な復習に心がけること。
副読本の内容を計画的に自己学習すること。
Students are required to review each class using handouts.
Students are also expected to read the reference books in advance.
