政治を身体のアナロジーでとらえる方法は、ヨーロッパにおいてはかなり古い時代にさかのぼる伝統であるが、現代政治の中にも明確に息づいている。このことを具体的に理解するために、ボディポリティーク論の古典的研究であるカントーロヴィッチを取り上げ、次いで、現代の代議政治との関係を論じたManowの文献を読み進めていく。
The way in which politics is viewed by analogy with the body is a tradition that dates back to much older times in Europe, but it is clearly alive and well in contemporary politics. To understand this in concrete terms, we will take up Kantorowicz's classic study of body politic theory, followed by a reading of Manow's literature on the relationship between body politics and contemporary representative politics.
初回（説明会）を除いて8回で読了する。
各章の内容を報告する担当者を特に置くことはしないが、全参加者が毎回指定箇所に関するコメントを考えて披露すること。コメントをもとに議論を進める。
The reading will be completed in eight sessions, excluding the first session (briefing session).
There will be no specific person in charge of reporting the contents of each chapter, but all participants are expected to come up with comments on the designated sections each time and present them. Discussion will proceed based on the comments.

主テキスト：カントーロヴィッチ『王の二つの身体』ちくま学芸文庫・2003年；Philip Manow, In the King’s Shadow, Polity, 2010.
各章における歴史用語や政治学概念について、あらかじめ調べて起き、授業中に指名されても答えられるようにしておくこと。英文よりも日本語の翻訳の方が難解であり、かなりの理解力と読解力を必要とする。
Students are expected to research historical terms and political science concepts in each chapter in advance and be prepared to answer questions if asked to do so in class. The Japanese translation is more difficult than the English, and requires considerable comprehension and reading ability.
