E-learning English I-A Academic Reading and Vocabulary
(This is an e-learning course for students retaking English I-A)

授業の目的と概要/Object and Summary of Class

Students will improve their academic vocabulary and reading comprehension skills.
The course has two objectives:
Objective 1: Improve reading and vocabulary-building skills
Objective 2: Recognize the text’s main idea, key information.

学修の到達目標/Goal of Study

Students will learn the following core skills, as outlined in Pathways to Academic English 4.2 Edition, for each objective:

Objective 1 core skills:
(1) Word Parts: With knowledge of word parts, students can reinforce their understanding of known words, anticipate the meanings of unknown words, and identify the part of speech of a word.
(2) Synonym Vocabulary: With knowledge of synonym vocabulary students can increase vocabulary which is important for all language skills, and synonym vocabulary is especially useful when paraphrasing and summarizing.
Objective 2 core skills:
(1) Skimming and Scanning: With skimming and scanning skills students can obtain information from long text quickly and efficiently, identify keywords, and find specific information.
(2) Summarizing and Paraphrasing: With paraphrasing skills students will be able to rewrite a statement into their own words. With summarizing skills students will be able to rewrite passages to produce a condensed version of the original.

In addition, students will be enrolled in two online Edulinx courses.
1) Academic English Reading
2) IELTS Reading B2

This course is entirely online (with the exception of the final test, which will be conducted in the classroom). Students must purchase the Edulinx courses and complete the weekly assignments and lesson tests focusing on reading skills and vocabulary learning. In addition, students must also complete weekly assignments based on the four core skills of the English I-A course.

Week 4: Understanding inference and implication / Skimming and scanning (Topic: Behavioural Science and Technology)
Week 5: Recognizing paraphrase / Paraphrasing and summarizing / (Topic: Art and Geography)
Week 6: Identifying arguments / Paraphrasing and summarizing (Topic: Science)
Week 7: Understanding references / Paraphrasing and summarizing (Topic: History and Technology)
Week 8: Understanding references / Word parts (Topic: Economics and Science)
Week 9: Understanding relationships between ideas / Word parts (Topic: Business)
Week 10: Understanding supporting points / Word parts (Topic: Archaeology and Science)
Week 11: Understanding relationships between ideas / Synonyms / (Topic: History and Psychology)
Week 12: Understanding supporting points / Synonyms / (Topic: Environmental Science)
Week 13: Understanding the meaning from context / Synonyms (Topic: Sociology)
Week 14: Scanning (Topic: Earth Science) / Core skills review
Week 15: Skimming (Topic: Art and Economics) / Core skills review
Week 16: Final test (Conducted on campus and in the classroom)

成績評価方法/Evaluation Method

Edulinx e-learning courses 50%
Pathways to Academic English Materials 20%
Final test (done in the classroom, NOT online) 30%
Students must complete weekly assignments throughout the course.
In principle, an “A” is given to the top 10% of students.

授業時間外学修/Preparation and Review

Students must purchase the Edulinx courses and complete the weekly assignments and lesson tests focusing on reading skills and vocabulary learning. In addition, students must also complete weekly assignments based on the four core skills of the English I-A course. There will be a final test that will be conducted on campus in week 16.
