Academic Listening and Speaking

授業の目的と概要/Object and Summary of Class

Students will improve their academic listening and speaking skills. The course has two objectives:
Objective 1: Take and discuss notes
Objective 2: Use common spoken academic expressions

学修の到達目標/Goal of Study

Students will learn the following core skills, as outlined in Pathways to Academic English 4th edition v.2, for each objective:
Objective 1 core skills:
(1) Note-Taking While Listening: Students will be able to identify key information from academic lectures and organize the information clearly.
(2) Orally Summarizing from Notes: Students will first be able to determine the important information and then verbally communicate it.
Objective 2 core skills:
(1) Idiomatic Language: Students will be able to increase their knowledge of metaphors, phrasal verbs, idiomatic expressions, and idioms.
(2) Interrogatives and Stating Opinions: Students will improve their ability to form grammatically correct questions when requesting information, and defend their positions with facts, details, and evidence when answering questions.

Week 1: Orientation: How to use two textbooks.
Week 2: Pathways Ch.5 Note-Taking While Listening: Key Words and Phrases.
Week 3: Pathways Ch.5 Listening & Taking Notes: Abbreviations and Symbols.
Week 4: Pathways Ch.6 Orally Summarizing from Notes.
Week 5: Pathways Ch.6 Orally Summarizing from Notes (Listening and Speaking Exercise)
Week 6: TOEFL® Book: pp.9~21 (Listening Exercise)
Week 7: TOEFL® Book: pp.22~24 (Listening Exercise)
Week 8: Mid-term Quiz (based on TOEFL® ITP textbook)
Week 9: Pathways Ch.7 Idiomatic Expressions: Metaphors, Phrasal Verbs.
Week 10: Pathways Ch.7 Idiomatic Expressions: Idiomatic Expressions, Idioms.
Week 11: Pathways Ch.7 Idiomatic Expressions: Exercises.
Week 12: Pathways Ch 8. Interrogatives and Stating Opinions: Common Mistakes and Common Greetings.
Week 13: Pathways Ch 8. Interrogatives and Stating Opinions: Rhetorical Questions, Embedded Questions and Stating Opinions
Week 14: Pathways Ch 7. Ch 8. Review and Giving Opinions (Speaking Exercise)
Week 15: Final Test (based on Pathways and TOEFL® Book)
Week 16: Make-Up Day (just in case)

成績評価方法/Evaluation Method

In principle, an “A” is given to the top 10% of students.
Quizzes: 20% (4 quizzes)
Assignments: 15% (4 assignments)
Mid-Term test 25%
Final test 40% (based on TOEFL ITP textbook)
