Introductory Science Experiments

授業の目的と概要/Object and Summary of Class

Natural sciences seek the truth for humanity, feedback and apply the obtained wisdom to society, and contribute to the progress of humankind. In the natural science processes, it is vital for us to notice an issue to be solved and make a hypothesis to find a solution to the issue. Experiments play essential roles in confirming or disproving the hypothesis. Moreover, treasures belonging to all humankind are constructed by disclosing and publishing continuously the scientific processes and experimental results followed by discussion. Introductory Science Experiments is a laboratory experiment class consisting of interdisciplinary subjects with basic physics, chemistry, biology, and earth sciences. This class will help students to understand the law and mechanism of nature by carrying out measurements and observations by themselves. Moreover, it will help students to study how to verbalize the results. In this way, students will be able to have a positive attitude towards study and research in natural sciences.

学修の到達目標/Goal of Study

Students will carry out experiments by themselves and think the obtained results logically. The class consists of five themed courses entitled “Life”,“Earth and Environment”, “Energy”, “Materials”, and “Science and Culture” having interdiciplinary subjects with basic physics, chemistry, biology and earth sciences. “Energy”course will not be conducted in this semester. Through these laboratory experiments, students will be able to obtain abilities as follows:
1: Scientific logical thinking
2: Motivation to challenge novel interdisciplinary science fields
3: Scientific writing

授業内容・方法と進度予定/Contents and Progress Schedule of the Class

In Week 1, guidance is given to provide students in-person how to carry out science experiments and how to write scientific reports. After the guidance, students will carry out one subject in every two weeks and submit a report by the next experiment. Students may ask questions to teachers and teaching assistants anytime at their lab places. Additionally, students may ask questions to teachers and teaching assistants using Google Classroom.

Week 14 and 15: Lab-report writing and Q&A about experiments.

成績評価方法/Evaluation Method

Students' grades will be based on evaluation of both the submission and scores of student's reports on each subject.
Academic cheating and plagiarism are strictly prohibited. Students must avoid "completely copy-and-paste plagiarism" and "word-for-word plagiarism" from the text and/also the report of colleagues. When academic cheating and plagiarism are found, a penalty will be imposed and no credit for the class will be given.
