Integrated Academic Speaking and Listening
Students will learn integrated academic listening and speaking skills. The course has two objectives:
Objective 1: Understand a speaker’s intent
Objective 2: Discuss academic topics
Students will learn the following core skills, as outlined in Pathways to Academic English 4th
Edition v. 2, for each objective:
Objective 1 core skills:
(1) Indirect Language: Students will better understand hedging, suggesting, requesting, refusing, and apologizing.
(2) Tone of Voice: Students will improve their ability to express their intent and add implied meaning when speaking and infer whether someone’s words are to be understood literally, figuratively, directly, or indirectly when listening.
Objective 2 core skills:
(1) Fluency and Pronunciation: Students will be able to improve their ability to speak without pausing or taking breaks when presenting their ideas and to improve their pronunciation accuracy of both individual sounds and groups of sounds.
(2) Discussion Strategies: Students will be able to improve their ability to ask questions, get information, and exchange ideas about study or research-related topics.
Additionally, students will be able to:
1. improve English communication skills through groupwork, discussions, and presentations.
2. increase English vocabulary for use in major-based academic contexts
3. improve TOEFL® scores
4. increase knowledge and interest in foreign culture and global affairs
5. build English presentation and discussion skills though in-class activities

In principle, an “A” is given to the top 10% of students.
1. Lesson quizzes and weekly homework: 25%
2. Classroom participation / communication and discussions / supplemental activities and in-class assignments: 50% (including but not limited to: in-class essay style writing assignments, active participation in weekly group discussions, presentations, group work, participation in supplemental classroom activities)
3. Final exam: 25%

The TOTAL evaluation for this class is made by ADDING TOGETHER the final grade for this class (70%) and the score from the TOEFL ITP® test (30%)
