Academic Listening and Speaking
Students will improve their academic listening and speaking skills. The course has two objectives:
Objective 1: Take and discuss notes
Objective 2: Use common spoken academic expressions
Students will learn the following core skills, as outlined in Pathways to Academic English 4th edition v.2, for each objective:
Objective 1 core skills:
(1) Note-Taking While Listening: Students will be able to identify key information from academic lectures and organize the information clearly.
(2) Orally Summarizing from Notes: Students will first be able to determine the important information and then verbally communicate it.
Objective 2 core skills:
(1) Idiomatic Language: Students will be able to increase their knowledge of metaphors, phrasal verbs, idiomatic expressions, and idioms.
(2) Interrogatives and Stating Opinions: Students will improve their ability to form grammatically correct questions when requesting information, and defend their positions with facts, details, and evidence when answering questions.

In principle, an “AA” is given to the top 10% of students and an “A” is given to the next 20%.
