【国際共修】Understanding Japan through Miyagi’s Traditional Culture (Sparrow Dance) （English） 宮城の伝統文化すずめ踊りを通して、日本を知る（英語）
Objective and Summary of Class
This course aims to explore Japanese culture by introducing the origins of modern Japanese society and enhancing students' understanding of the mentality of the Japanese people. This course operates under the assumption that understanding local culture is an important first step in becoming a global citizen, and thus focuses on the traditional culture of Miyagi prefecture. Students will learn about and discuss several concepts related to Japanese culture and then analyze Suzume Odori (Sparrow Dance) using the cultural concepts discussed. Students will also learn how to dance the Suzume Odori through classes and videos.
授業の目的と概要
この授業では、日本の伝統文化の理解を通じて、現代の日本社会や日本人の考え方についての理解を深めることを目的とする。この授業では、グローバルな社会を理解する上で欠かせない「ローカル」の理解を深めるという視点から、宮城県という地域の伝統文化に焦点を当てる。この授業では、学生は日本文化に関する様々な概念についてのディスカッションを行い、それらのコンセプトを用いてすずめ踊りについて分析し、理解を深める。学生は、授業を通じて、すずめ踊りの踊り方についても学ぶ。
Goal of Study
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
1) Describe what the Suzume Odori and the Sendai Aoba Festival are
2) Discuss modern Japanese society through Japanese cultural concepts
3) Analyze the Suzume Odori using these concepts

１）「すずめ踊り」や「仙台青葉まつり」とは何か説明することができる
２）日本の現代社会について、日本の文化に関する概念を用いて議論ができる
３）それらの概念を用いて、すずめ踊りについて分析することができる
Class Schedule and Contents
This course consists of four parts: (1) experiences and demonstrations of traditional Japanese culture, (2) the study and discussion of cultural concepts, and (3) analysis using these concepts

本授業は3つのパートによって構成されています。（１）日本の伝統文化を経験・体験する、（２）日本文化の概念を学びディスカッションをする、（３）日本文化の概念を用いて分析を行う。

Evaluation Method
Students will be assessed and graded based on active participation (50%), homework (20%), and the final individual presentation (30%). The details of the assessment will be provided in class.
