授業題目/Class Subject

Electromagnetism

授業の目的と概要/Object and Summary of Class

Electromagnetic phenomena are abundant in our daily lives from electricity (volts, amperes, watts, etc) we use every day, magnets on our refrigerator, to all lights surrounding us. The vastness and complexity of this interesting subject results from only four equations, Maxwell's equations. In this course, they shall be the starting and ending point. Our goal is to appreciate and understand various manifestations of these four equations by studying electric and magnetic forces and interactions between them.

学修の到達目標/Goal of Study

By the end of the course, you are expected to gain familiarity with and obtain basic understandings of Coulomb's Law, electric fields, Gauss' Law, electric potential, capacitance, circuits, magnetic forces and fields, Ampere's law, induction, and electromagnetic waves, and how they are all summarized in Maxwell equations.

授業時間外学修/Preparation and Review

This course requires one time purchase of the WileyPlus system at the cost of $45 USD if you have not already done so in Physics A, and this covers all Physics A, B, and C. The system includes an electronic version of the required textbook with many integrated features to facilitate understanding of the subjects and problem solving skill in physics. The system also comes with adaptive practice, with which one will practice problem solving based on his/her own proficiency in each chapter that will be covered in the course. Access to the internet is necessary outside of the class.

授業へのパソコン持ち込み【必要/不要】/Students must bring their own computers to class[Yes / No]

Not necessary, but various demonstration/simulation with MATLAB will be given both in and out of the class.

その他/In Addition

Understanding of basic and important notions encountered in Physics A (classical mechanics) is required for this course. Knowledge of vector analysis is desirable.
For those who have taken Physics A in the previous semester, the WileyPlus account that is purchased will be continued, and no additional payment is necessary. Survey of conceptual understanding of the subject will be conducted at the first and last lecture to assess effectiveness of the instructional method. For registration to the WileyPlus and payment method, please contact takeshi.koike.b6_at_tohoku.ac.jp, in advance before the first day of the class.
