Students will learn the following core skills, as outlined in Pathways to Academic English for III [PDF Textbook], for each objective:
Objective 1 core skills:
(1) Presentation Preparation: Students will improve their ability to choose a presentation topic, create an outline, research the topic, write the script, design the visuals, understand the presentation setting, practice the presentations, and prepare for questions.
(2) Presentation Strategies: Students will improve their presentation skills by practicing spoken language strategies, body language strategies, visual language strategies, and audience engagement strategies.
Objective 2 core skills:
(1) Listening Critically: Students will improve their ability to analyze and evaluate the information that a speaker is giving and form an opinion based on the information.
(2) Question and Answers Strategies: Students will improve their ability to answer factual, clarifying, exploratory, and challenging questions which they will likely encounter during the Q&A session after their academic presentation.
A. Core skills of academic presentations
During the first five weeks of class, we will study the basic skills for making academic presentations, following the textbook (Pathways to Academic English for III). There will be a number of assignments each week that students must complete through Google Classroom both in-class and for homework.
B. Presentations preparation
After we cover the basic skills of academic presentations, students will be separated into 12 groups consisting of 3-4 students each to prepare a presentation. There will be two weeks of preparation after which each group will present their presentation to the class. After the first presentation, students will be reassigned to new groups and prepare for a second presentation. In total, each student must present twice during the semester. In addition to presenting themselves, students are also expected to ask questions and make comments about other groups' presentations.
C. Supplementary activities
Two times throughout the semester, we will take a break from the regular activities to take part in a supplementary activity. These include lectures or short videos followed by a discussion, English-language board games and conversations with international students. Students are expected to come to class on time, be prepared for class and participate positively.
