Academic Reading and Vocabulary
Students will improve their academic vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. The course has two objectives:
Objective 1: Improve reading and vocabulary-building skills
Objective 2: Recognize the text’s main idea and key information.
Students will learn the following core skills, as outlined in Pathways to Academic English 4th edition v. 2, for each objective:
Objective 1 core skills:
(1) Word Parts: With knowledge of prefixes, roots, and suffixes, students can reinforce their understanding of known words, anticipate the meanings of unknown words, and identify the part of speech of a word.
(2) Synonym Vocabulary: Students can increase their vocabulary and become able to use synonyms when paraphrasing and summarizing.
Objective 2 core skills:
(1) Skimming and Scanning: Students can obtain information from long text quickly and efficiently, identify keywords, and find specific information.
(2) Summarizing and Paraphrasing: Students will be able to rewrite a statement in their own words and produce a condensed version of the original passage.

In general this class follows the course of the textbook also integrating pair- and groupwork. Please keep in mind, that a proactive and inquisitive participation will not only foster your understanding of this class’s skills but is a chance to engage with your colleagues.
In this class we will use ISTU as a general information platform as well as for handing in homework.
In principle, an “AA” is given to the top 10% of students and an “A” is given to the next 20%.

1) I expect you to review the units content each time.
2) After every class, a small homework will be given, which has to be handed in until the next unit via ISTU. The homework will mostly be a review of the content of that unit, but it can also include exercises to prepare the contend of the next unit. In general, belated homework is not accepted.
3) I further strongly encourage you to read English texts.
