Integrated Academic Reading and Writing
Students will improve their academic reading and writing skills. The course has two objectives:
Objective 1: Identify the text’s organization and logic
Objective 2: Construct an academic paragraph
Students will learn the following core skills, as outlined in Pathways to Academic English 4th edition v.2, for each objective:
Objective 1 core skills:
(1) Connotative and Denotative Meanings: Students will improve their ability to understand the difference between the explicit or direct meaning of words and the feeling, implication, or emotion that individuals, cultures, and societies associate with them.
(2) Implications and Inferences: Students will build skills that help them understand the writer’s or speaker’s degree of certainty about a statement, comprehend logical connections between pieces of information, and notice why the author included certain information.
Objective 2 core skills:
(1) Collocations: Students will be able to appropriate pairings of words which will help them to write paragraphs with fewer errors and process English more quickly when reading academic texts or listening to lectures.
(2) Paragraph Writing: Students will be able to improve their paragraph writing skills by better understanding paragraph structure and including adequate evidence, proper connections to ideas, and variation.
